Fords Idea - Heating Seat Belts

You may have recently heard Ford’s announcement about its crazy idea having to do with seat belts. If you haven’t heard, let me fill you in.

Basically, the Ford Company has filed an idea with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to improve seat belts. This idea involves the heating of seat belts. The extensive patent, consisting of more than 30 pages, goes into great detail about how to modify the standard seat belt to release heat. To summarize their proposal, a specified amount of electric heating elements would be intertwined into the webbing of the seat belt. Once the occupant of a vehicle buckles up, the electric current would be relayed onto them and they would instantly feel the warmth.

However great this idea may sound, it is quite possible that it will not pass due to safety concerns. Being tangled up with electricity wrapped around you, in the case of an accident, doesn’t sound like such a fun time. Also, a frayed seat belt with electric heated elements woven through poses another problem. Who knows how bad it could get if something were to spill on the frayed webbing? Perhaps Ford can find another location that wouldn’t pose danger as much as in a seat belt.
